4 vs. 8 Cold Spark Fountain Bases: How Many Do You Need?
Event equipment guide · Choosing your base count
Choose 4 cold spark fountain bases when your approved event plan needs up to four effect positions. Consider 8 when it needs five to eight positions, or two preset groups of four with verified control grouping. Start with positions and cues—not guest count. More bases add placement capacity; they do not establish a taller effect or more independent control channels.
For a wedding entrance, first dance, or DJ production, the right quantity depends on what needs to happen and where. Buying eight bases for a four-position brief may leave equipment unused. Buying four for two separate preset areas may introduce a changeover your schedule cannot accommodate.
This guide covers Any Case Gear’s insert-based fountain control systems. If you are still choosing between this equipment and a powder-fed machine, read cold spark fountain base systems vs. powder-fed machines first.
What changes when you choose 4 vs. 8 bases?
The main difference is the number of base positions available. Treat control behavior, consumables, and package contents as separate checks.

| Planning question | 4 bases | 8 bases |
|---|---|---|
| Available positions | Up to 4. | Up to 8. |
| Base battery allocation | 4 × 9V batteries. | 8 × 9V batteries. |
| One cue using every base* | 4 compatible inserts. | 8 compatible inserts. |
| Two cues using every base* | 8 compatible inserts total, with an approved replacement workflow. | 16 compatible inserts total, with an approved replacement workflow. |
| Two preset four-position areas | Cannot equip both with four bases at once. | Enough bases; selective grouping must be confirmed. |
| Preparation | Four base positions to allocate and check. | Eight base positions to allocate and check if all are used. |
| Independent channels | Verify the actual controller assignment. | Do not assume eight independent channels. |
*Insert examples assume one compatible single-use insert per base activation. Rehearsal and reserve quantities are additional. The listings specify one 9V battery per base, excluded from the basic offer; remote power requirements must be checked separately. Basic base listings also exclude inserts.
How many effect positions does your event need?
Count the positions in the plan approved for the actual equipment and consumable. A guest total does not tell you how many positions fit the room, what the camera will see, or which locations the venue and operator can accept.
The diagrams below illustrate the quantity difference: two groups of two versus two groups of four. They are not floor plans, clearance diagrams, or placement instructions. Marker spacing has no physical scale.

For a wedding entrance
Define the entrance moment and its approved effect positions with the production team. If the brief calls for four positions, a four-base kit supplies that hardware count. If it calls for eight, an eight-base kit supplies the count without relying on moving four units during the moment.
Ask the photographer or videographer which positions serve the intended shot. Adding bases outside the composition does not necessarily improve that shot, and the shot itself does not establish an acceptable operating location.

For an entrance followed by a first dance
Separate the two moments on your cue sheet. Four bases may cover both when the same approved positions remain useful and the operator has an appropriate consumable replacement workflow between cues.
If each moment needs a different four-position area and both must be preset, eight bases provide enough hardware for two groups of four. Before choosing that approach, verify that the supplied controls can select the intended group without activating the other. Eight physical bases alone do not establish that capability.

For a DJ or stage production
Count required positions across the production area, then document which should activate together. A wider stage does not automatically require eight, and an eight-base kit does not automatically provide an eight-step chase. Match the cue requirement to the verified controller behavior.
How many inserts should you budget for?
Count base activations across all planned cues. Under the single-use assumption, four positions used once need four inserts; four positions used twice need eight. The hardware count stays at four, but the consumable allocation changes.
Planning calculation: total show inserts = the sum of active base positions across all cues, assuming one compatible single-use insert per activation. Add separately agreed rehearsal and reserve quantities.
For example, a hypothetical entrance using four bases plus a first dance using four bases requires eight show inserts under that assumption. That remains eight whether the plan reuses four bases with an approved reset or uses two preset groups of four.
By comparison, an eight-position entrance followed by an eight-position dance requires sixteen show inserts under the same assumption. Choosing an eight-base kit does not mean you have supplied consumables for two full eight-position moments.
Do not assume a used insert can be paused, restarted, or immediately replaced. Confirm the compatible insert’s instructions and the operator’s changeover requirements before committing to repeated cues.
Assumes one compatible single-use insert per activation. Add rehearsal and reserve quantities separately. Reusing bases requires an approved consumable changeover.
Compare the complete event budget
Use the current price of the selected kit, then add compatible inserts for the actual cue list, base batteries, any required remote batteries, and transport and operator preparation. Compare both options against the same event brief. A kit price by itself is not a complete event cost.
Should you buy the 4-base or 8-base kit?
Choose 4 when…
Your approved plan needs no more than four preset positions, the controls support your cues, and any repeat moment has a workable consumable changeover.
This keeps the hardware allocation aligned with a four-position brief.
Consider 8 when…
Your approved plan needs five to eight preset positions, or two four-position areas that the verified controls can manage as required.
The additional bases should solve a specific position or changeover requirement.
For rental inventory, use the briefs you actually serve. If most jobs need four positions, establish how often additional positions would be used before expanding. If you intend to split an eight-base package between separate jobs, confirm that each setup would have the necessary compatible controller and accessories; do not assume two complete independent systems are included.
Confirm these five details before ordering
- Approved position count: how many bases must be preset for each area?
- Cue list: which positions activate at each moment, and which are reused?
- Controller grouping: can the exact supplied equipment select those positions as intended?
- Consumables and power: which compatible inserts and batteries are needed, and what is excluded?
- Changeover: does the operator have an appropriate workflow and enough time between moments?
Have the venue and responsible operator review the actual equipment and insert documentation. Product naming does not establish venue approval or a universal clearance distance.
Common questions about 4 vs. 8 fountain bases
How many cold spark fountain bases do I need for 100 guests?
Guest count alone is insufficient. Choose from the approved effect positions, cue list, and controller requirements. A 100-guest event does not automatically need either four or eight bases.
Does an 8-base kit have eight independent channels?
Do not assume it does. Base quantity and channel quantity are different specifications. Confirm the supplied remotes, base assignments, and supported grouping before planning individual-position cues.
Can I buy four bases now and add another four later?
Confirm expansion compatibility before buying. Matching appearance or brand does not establish shared remote operation, compatible addressing, or the ability to combine two kits into the control setup you want.
Do I have to use all eight bases at every cue?
Only plan a smaller active group after confirming selective control for the exact configuration. The number of bases you own and the number activated at a cue can differ, but the controller must support the intended selection.
Will eight bases produce a taller fountain than four?
Base quantity does not determine the effect height of an individual insert. Eight bases add possible positions. Check the compatible insert specification for its effect characteristics.
Match the kit to your position and cue plan
Compare the current listings once you know how many positions you need. Check package contents and controller details before ordering.
